Course description:
This is a higher degree by research, incorporating coursework and professional placement components, completed over four years of full-time or eight years of part-time study. It is possible for students to move between full-time and part-time modes in certain circumstances. Graduates are equipped for careers in counselling psychology in hospitals, community welfare organisations, research organisations, and private practice.
Entry requirements:
Students should have a degree from an Australian university and a completed four-year sequence of studies in psychology at first or upper second class level in a course or courses accredited by the Australian Psychological Society, or equivalent overseas qualifications recognised by the APS, or a masters degree in psychology recognised by the APS. They should have experience in face-to-face counselling or significant training in counselling skills e.g. Lifeline, Care Ring, counselling skills in tertiary programs or other appropriate work experience and they should able to demonstrated possession of an appropriate level of knowledge and skill related to research. In accordance with the guidelines set by the Swinburne Graduate Research School, to have applied for and gained candidature approved by the Swinburne Higher Degrees Committee. Applicants who fail to gain candidature will not be eligible to continue in the doctoral program and may choose to apply for a place in the masters program. Students should also fulfil any one of the following English language requirements: satisfactory completion of the Swinburne English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Level 2 program with a teacher's recommendation for the required level of study; obtaining a minimum IELTS overall band score of 7.0 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.5; TOEFL (Paper-based) minimum score of 600 (with Test of Written English (TWE) score of 5) or TOEFL (Internet-based) minimum score of 97 with no band less than 20.

Students should complete the application form and attach it with the following documents: application fee payment details (credit card details, bank draft or bank cheque), evidence of English proficiency (certified copies of IELTS or TOEFL results) or swinburne placement test, certified copies of previous academic results, any other relevant documents, i.e. letters from schools or employers, folio (for Design or Performing Arts courses, excluding Certificate IV Design) and if students are applying for advanced standing/credit transfers, include certified and translated (English) copies of the syllabus from their previous/current study program.
